Jo Mitchell, Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher

Hi I'm Jo and I'm a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher.

Iyengar Yoga is a safe and progressive method of Yoga, developed by BKS Iyengar.

It’s arguably the most common form of yoga as it’s taught all around the world, with all teachers receiving similar training ensuring the quality of teaching remains high, for you, the student.

In all classes you will learn from a carefully graded syllabus of postures so that stability and endurance in the poses comes without strain or injury.

I really enjoyed class yesterday. I am learning a lot about controlling my body and holding back from injury. Thank you Jo!

All my classes are suitable for adult beginners. Poses are modified and variations offered to suit any ability. No yoga experience is necessary.

I also offer Teen Yoga classes and online classes.

ABout me

Hi, I’m Jo and I am delighted to be a Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher. It has taken me a long time, with many, many hours of practice, peer to peer learning and class attendance to pass my assignment and become a Level 1 Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher.

All Iyengar yoga teachers are trained to very high standards, with a minimum of six years’ practice before qualifying.

After completing three years’ regular attendance in class, trainee teachers then spend at least three years of mentorship programme before applying for the Level 1 teaching assessment, which they may or may not pass.

Many other systems of yoga automatically award a teaching certificate at the end of teacher training based on the number of hours involved. You may have noticed 200hrs or 500hrs training detailed by teachers. However in Iyengar Yoga this doesn’t happen. You need to pass your assessment in order to become qualified and a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher

6 ways you can benefit from Iyengar Yoga

Jo Mitchell is a level 1 Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher based in Kirkcaldy, Fife.

Strength & flexibilty

I’m now in my late 40’s but feel stronger than I ever have, including when I was physically fitter ie doing more regular sports and gym fitness.

A regular Iyengar Yoga practice has helped reduce headaches, lower back ache and knee niggles that I used to suffer from.

Being in my late 40’s perimenopausal symptoms are beginning to present however Iyengar Yoga has given me a took kit to help manage my symptoms and manage my energy levels through my monthly cycle.

Balance & alignment

Iyengar Yoga has greatly improved my posture. The precision and alignment gained through the asana work helps me throughout every day. I can sit at my desk without permanently slouching. I no longer constantly wish for a back massage to relieve my tired neck, back and shoulders as I have all the techniques to do this through my yoga practice.

I have found Iyengar Yoga is like a tool kit. It can help me feel energised. It can also help me create focus and calm when I need it. Through Yoga I can create different changes in the body.

Practicing Iyengar Yoga implicitly establishes a growth mindset. Despite an aging body, the breath never gets old. Regular yoga practice helps me find new connections and awareness in the body. Every time I practice an asana,it is different in some way.

Iyengar Yoga is a safe and progressive method of yoga, suitable for beginners. No prior experience or fitness level required.

The focus on precision and alignment in Iyengar Yoga addresses the imbalances in the body and helps balance and stability.

As an Iyengar Yoga Teacher, I will help you focus on the correct alignment of your body in the poses, ensuring you’re working safely.

Clare Yoga student feedback to beginners class

Yes it was a really good class. I really enjoyed it. I felt strong after it. My glutes and my back are telling me today that they worked hard. I could feel the things you were explaining and the instructions were great. I liked the seated twist with the lift and turn from the hips, ribs etc. I could actually feel that and my body turning in sections. Fabulous class.
